We repair potholes with a failed base by saw-cut full-depth patching with hot mix asphalt.

Asphalt Repair Methods: Matching the Method to the Damage

Asphalt repair methods depend on whether the damage reaches the base or stays near the surface.

Asphalt repair methods: a saw-cut patch area excavated to the gravel base before new asphalt

  • Saw-Cut Full-Depth Patching

    Saw-cut full-depth patching removes failed asphalt and base material from a localized damaged area, such as a pothole or structural damage.

    We carry out a full-depth patch in these five steps.

    1. Cut clean, straight edges around the damaged area.
    2. Remove the failed asphalt and compromised base material.
    3. Place and compact new aggregate base.
    4. Apply tack coat, then place hot mix asphalt.
    5. Compact the patch with vibratory equipment.

  • Infrared Asphalt Repair

    Infrared asphalt repair reheats the existing asphalt and adds new hot mix before the area is recompacted.

    We use infrared heaters to soften the surface, rake in new hot mix and recompact the area, and the base must be sound.

    Utility cuts and small surface patches are examples of this work.

  • Skin Patching

    Skin patching adds a thin layer of hot mix to shallow depressions and raveled areas over a structurally sound base.

    We apply a tack coat and a 1 to 1.5 inch layer of hot mix, with feathered edges.
